May 30 through June 9
Welcome to the inaugural season of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Music Festival, centered in beautiful Floyd County — a vibrant rural community nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We are preparing for a dynamic and exciting eleven days – May 30 through June 9 — of orchestral concerts, intimate chamber music, and other diverse musical experiences, presented in both traditional venues and unusual sites in this friendly mountain community.
Our 2013 Festival, “Classics in the Blue Ridge – from Bluegrass to Beethoven”, features young, highly talented emerging artists, supported by extraordinary, experienced professional musicians who both perform with and serve as mentors to rising young talent. As Artistic Director and Conductor, I feel privileged to work with such capable musicians, as well as an active Board of Directors and impressive group of volunteers, in a community that has opened its hearts, homes, and financial resources to support this unique and collaborative musical adventure.
The music will be diverse. Among the Classics to be performed, you will hear Dvorak’s beloved Symphony No 9 “From the New World”, Sibelius’ masterpiece Finlandia, and Beethoven’s wonderful Fifth Symphony. Elgar’s beloved “Enigma” variations will showcase our full Festival Orchestra, and we connect to the mountain heritage with mandolin virtuoso and composer Jeff Midkiff ‘s new concerto “From the Blue Ridge”. There are programs for every music lover to cherish, and you should be prepared for some delightful surprises. The broad array of music will be performed in some grand sites, as well as warm and intimate settings.
We are in the process of welcoming applications from emerging artists to be Academy Fellows. Fellows, ranging in age from roughly 18 to 30, will perform in the Festival Orchestra alongside the professional musicians. The Fellows will also perform in coached chamber groups and a variety of other ensembles, receive private and master class instruction, and have opportunity to attend useful seminars. Several Fellows will be featured on “Concerto Night”, June 8th. Fellows will have the opportunity to experience the beauty and extraordinarily diverse and welcoming resources offered in Floyd, and free housing in the community will be provided. Additional information about the Academy and opportunities for Fellows is given in the Festival Academy tab.
Whether performer or audience, you are invited to join us in this dynamic enterprise. Experience Floyd as many locals do: where sustainable living is valued, and where the musical, visual, craft, and movement arts are cherished. And where the physical beauty of the hillsides, the unique galleries, shops and local restaurants, as well as the sustaining traditions of our heritage music create a heart-full and value-centered atmosphere in which our Festival can thrive.
We are grateful to our sponsors, donors, partners, and volunteers — who have enabled us to be “on track” with our fund raising events and pre-Festival concerts. We invite you to join us on April 18 for our Spring Gala Benefit at the beautiful, newly constructed Floyd EcoVillage. We also invite you to subscribe to the Festival season, from May 30 through June 9, and to consider making a donation to help make this exciting collaborative undertaking sustainable.
The 2013 Music Festival will soon be here, and we hope you will immerse yourself in the varied opportunities available in this exciting venture! All are welcome at Virginia’s Blue Ridge Music Festival.
