THE FLOYD RADIO SHOW: Live from the heart of downtown Floyd Virginia! The next show up is Saturday, May 11, 2013, 7:30 PM. Hosts Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth LaPrelle bring together a new variety show every month. They write and perform original radio plays, comedy bits, ads, jingles, music and more. Each show features three of the area’s finest old-timey musical acts, from storytelling banjo players to flatpicking guitarists to hard-driving stringbands.

Guests for May’s show include Wayne Henderson, Dean Reed and Nii Anang. Wayne Henderson’s top-notch finger-picking is a source of great pleasure and pride to his friends, family, and neighbors in Grayson County, Virginia; his guitar playing has also been enjoyed at Carnegie Hall, in three national tours of “Masters of the Steel-String Guitar”, and in seven nations in Asia. In addition to his reputation as a guitarist, Henderson is a luthier of great renown. He is a recipient of a 1995 National Heritage Award presented by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Dean Reed, has a long history in music and the local community. He is a Giles County native who grew up in Glen Lyn, VA and has been involved with music and local events his entire life. His father Henry Reed, a renown local old-time fiddler, taught him to play the guitar at age 7 and Dean has been playing ever since (as have most of his 10 siblings). He has been playing in local bands for most of his life, including the 1950s music show Country Jamboree on WHIS TV in Bluefield, VA (now WVVA).

floyd-radio-show-niianangNii Anang is originally from Ghana, West Africa and is now a full time resident of Floyd, VA. At age 16, Nii (Emmanuel) Anang was a founding member of the Pan African Orchestra, performing all over Ghana. Later he formed his own group, Adafi Tswalori, and recorded his first CD, Nyon (slave). In 2002 Nii Anang became a founding member of the original Kusun Ensemble, a dance & drum troop devoted to cultural education. He toured internationally with the ensemble until 2008, when he joined Aloha Africa as performer, dance and drumming teacher, and composer.
