Baldwin Pottery
The natural flora and fauna of the Appalachians inspires many of the carvings on our pottery. The Raku process we use to produce our pottery is a special glaze firing technique that makes each pot a unique work of art. This firing is done rapidly in an outdoor kiln until the glaze melts. The red hot pots are pulled from the kiln and placed in a can of sawdust, then covered to smother the flames. The resulting smoking action and reduction environment blackens the exposed clay and enhances many of the Raku glazes. Some of the glazes are designed to crackle in response to the thermal shock received from the rapid cooling that takes place when the pots are taken from the kiln. Our porcelain pieces are food and dishwasher safe.
