The Jacksonville Center and Floyd Virginia Lodging Association Partner to Create Artfull Escapes

ARTFULL ESCAPES LOGOThe Jacksonville Center for the Arts is partnering with the Floyd Virginia Lodging Association to create a new vacation program entitled ArtFull Escapes. The programs main purpose is to increase tourism to Floyd County from the surrounding region during the weekdays. It evolved from brainstorming sessions on how to increase participation in classes at The Jax by out of town visitors and has been in the works for more than a year.

“The Floyd Lodging Association is excited to partner with the Jacksonville Center for the Arts with a new package showcasing the unique classes and lodging that the two organizations can provide for people visiting the area,” said Derek Wall, Manager of Hotel Floyd. “Visitors interested in the arts should take advantage of this opportunity for a hands on experience and a unique lodging destination offering anything from small cabins and B&B’s to larger inns/hotels with local art and furniture. Floyd has it all!”

ArtFull Escapes is geared toward a group of four people. These people could be friends, family or co-workers, who are interested in a creative group learning experience in beautiful rural southwest Virginia. The program is comprised of a one or two day class at The Jax chosen by the group, a lodging voucher that can be used at participating Floyd County lodging establishments, coupons and discounts to various local shops and eateries, and a gift certificate to a wine tasting at Chateau Morrisette.

Classes that may be taken are part of The Jax’s OnDemand class offerings and are all taught by local instrutors. Class choices include: Felted Scarves, Hot Glass Beads, Stained Glass, Ceramic Sculpture, Wood Turning, Blacksmithing, Shibori (Japanese Tie-Dye), Papermaking, Introduction to the Potter’s Wheel, and Polymer Clay.

Participating lodging establishments are Ambrosia B&B, Beaver Glen B&B, Bella La Vita Inn, Blue Ridge Real Estate, Hotel Floyd, Inn The Hollow, Mountain Rose Inn, Mountain Song Inn B&B, Tuggles Gap Restaurant and Motel, Oak Haven Lodge, Stoney Meadow Inn B&B, The Room Upstairs at Bell Gallery, and Woodberry Inn. Angie and Shep Nance, Innkeepers

—————————————–

Business has steadily been growing since Woodberry Inn, Restaurant and Bar reopened on May 1, 2010 under the ownership and management of Angie and Shep Nance. The Nances, both retired from telecommunications with no prior background or experience in hospitality, spent a couple of months prior to the opening making considerable improvements, hiring staff and getting to know the community.

The Woodberry Inn is situated in an ideal spot just 200 yards off the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 174.1 in Floyd County about a quarter mile from the Patrick County line.  Local and weekend residents from surrounding towns and counties as well as Parkway travelers continue to discover the friendly environment, comfortable lodging, delicious food and refreshing beverages to be found here. Guests and locals have been known to spend a leisure afternoon fishing in the pond and watching the antics of Woodberry’s 2 male mallard ducks, Andy and Barney.

The Inn has 16 rooms, 4 with 1 queen bed and 12 with 2 full beds, each equipped with private bath, color television with 50+ cable channels, free WIFI and new remote-controlled heating and air conditioning units.

The guest list includes motorcycling and bicycling groups, international visitors from 12 countries, wedding parties, Floyd Fest and Chateau Morrisette concert attendees, locals returning to the area for high school and family reunions, couples looking for a romantic retreat and Blue Ridge Parkway tourists.

Guests now have the convenience of online reservations at www.woodberryinn.com, in addition to photos for viewing, a list of upcoming area events and our weekly restaurant specials.

Since last year, the Woodberry Restaurant has steadily become a local and regional favorite due to a top-notch kitchen staff headed by chef Shaun Sager, quality ingredients, a friendly, efficient staff and a pleasant dining environment.  Some of the favorite menu items are crab cake sandwich, 8 oz. beef tenderloin, shrimp and grits, Shaun’s meatloaf and freshly made burgers. The chef also prepares a wide range of weekly specials that have included steak Oscar, low country boil and fresh fish. The homemade desserts include bread pudding, key lime pie and fruit cobblers and are not to be missed!

Our restaurant is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion, to go out with family and friends or for a quiet dinner.  The patio, which seats 24, offers the perfect setting for a delicious meal. Reservations are recommended for parties who prefer to sit on the patio and parties of 5 or more.

The Bar at Woodberry Inn is an informal, impromptu meeting place for friends to meet or for making new friends.

The bar offers a wide selection of beer, wine and mixed drinks. Locally produced wines from Foggy Ridge Cider, Villa Appalaccia and Chateau Morrisette are available by the bottle and glass. Several local musicians, including Bill and Maggie Anderson, Scott Perry and Marcie Horne have performed during the past year.  The fall and winter will bring more musical events and the addition of a dart board. The bar has also become the place to watch special sporting events such as major golf and tennis tournaments, NASCAR races, thoroughbred horse racing and soccer world cup.

Little River Bed & Breakfast – 5 minutes from town…

I visited with Andrea Marshall owner of the Little River Bed and Breakfast located five minutes from town. I first met Andrea through her jewelry . She’s one of the founding members of the Floyd Artist Association and displays her work in a downtown gallery. Today I was visiting the B&B and checking out the west fork of the Little River that runs along her property. It makes for easy kayaking and the constant sound of a fresh mounting stream is always refreshing.

This is the third season for Little River Bed and Breakfast. Before starting this venture Andrea was the owner of a Heath food store in Virginia Beach. She came with a friend during Floyd Fest, fell in love and the rest is history. Sounds like my story! I asked her what’s for breakfast. She replied; local meat, fruit, eggs, wild cherries,  raspberries, baked egg with crispy asparagus, hash brown cup cakes, honey butter, french toast and dandelion fritters.

The estate is really laid back, a place you can kick your shoes off and disappear for a while. Expect something different everyday. Andrea is a musician and often has guest who come their to pick by the fire. The place is pet friendly and has room for six guest. It’s very cozy and you’ll feel at home right away. It’s just off of highway 8 tucked behind a long curve, with easy access to Floyd, and only 30 minutes to Christiansburg. Call early to get a room during the Virginia Tech games because they are usually booked.

Bent Mountain Lodge Bed & Breakfast – Simply Spectacular

I went to visit Bonnie and Jesse Lawrence owners of Bent Mountain Lodge Bed and Breakfast. I have to admit this is by far the most spectacular lodge and location in all of Floyd County and possibly all of Virginia. You can look in any direction and be amazed by the long and pretty views. Bent Mountain Lodge overlooks the Blue Ridge Parkway and is truly a sight to see. The view of Cahas Mountain out the front door is simply breathtaking. Today was so clear that I spotted Buffalo Mountain and was told by Bonnie that you can see all five surrounding counties from the decks of the lodge.

Images & Videos Below!

Bent Mountain Lodge is BIG! 15,000 square feet of amazing interior woodwork on 14 immaculate acres of pasture land. Jesse keeps a few horse on the property that are always looking for an apple or carrot. There are 10 suites, six inside the lodge and four in a long cabin next to the lodge. There are private decks and the five suites inside the main lodge have jacuzzi hot tubs. Bent Mountain Lodge offers high-speed Internet and all the suites have TVs. The lodge also has a large 22 foot handicapped ramped gazebo and a 12 by 40 foot sun room that must be great on a winter day. The grounds are a perfect setting for weddings, bridal luncheons, family reunions, you name it.

It’s OVER-THE-TOP!
